It works fine, but it requires quite a bit of work setting up the environment. The article is about using the debugger in the Eclipse IDE.

Some time ago, I wrote an article about software debugger for Arduino Uno which works with the GNU debugger – GDB. For more information on debugging options for Arduino, please see my older article here on Code Project. In practice, there is a way, which I want to describe in this article. These boards don’t have support for debugging and in general, it is not possible to debug the code in these boards without buying an external debug probe. There is no support for debugging the popular AVR-based boards like Uno, Nano or Mega in the Arduino extensions. The debugging they are talking about is only available to a few boards (e.g., Arduino M0 Pro) which include hardware debugger interface on the board. There is a ‘Debugging Arduino Code’ chapter in the documentation for the VS Code Arduino extensions which can be a bit misleading. One thing I should make clear first – this article is about debugging Arduino Uno, Nano, Mega (and possibly other boards based on the AVR microcontrollers). For part three which deals with improving the debugger by using custom bootloder see here. For part one which deals with setting up the VS Code to build Arduino programs, see here. Then xsltproc is used to pick out the function declarations. This is part two of a three part series of articles on creating and debugging programs in Visual Studio Code. The script invokes Doxygen to scan the source and write XML files. To alleviate my frustration, I developed a bash script and supporting files to add those # include directives and function prototypes to the top of the file while copying the. VS Code also sometimes fails if the Wire.h and/or SPI.h files have not been included in the main program.

ino source, and somehow relaxes the C++ requirement that functions be defined before they are referenced. Arduino IDE implicitly adds #import to the. One of my frustrations has been porting Arduino sketches (.ino) files to C++ as required for VS Code. With the PlatformIO extension, it works well for embedded devices too. Only a small part of my programming efforts are oriented to embedded devices, so I find the Visual Studio Code IDE (VS Code) suits my needs well.
